JOB TITLE: Custodian
REPORTS TO: Principal/Assistant Principal
SALARY: Based on State and Local Salary Schedule
STATUS: 10 or 12 months
SUMMARY: The job of Custodian was established for the purpose to perform a variety of general custodial and light groundskeeping work in the care and maintenance of assigned school buildings and facilities. Work involves sweeping, mopping and using vacuum cleaners to clean floors; washing walls, woodwork and fixtures; and policing buildings to empty trash receptacles and pick up debris, etc. The employee is also responsible for requisitioning necessary cleaning supplies.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
- Performs work in stripping, scrubbing, mopping, waxing, and spray buffing floors in school buildings
- Arranges and moves furniture, equipment, and supplies as needed including from one area to another
- Washes windows, woodwork, and walls
- Cleans restrooms, fixtures; replenishes tissue, towel and soap dispensers
- Replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes
- Empties waste receptacles into larger containers and removes containers from the building
- Performs minor repairs
- May open and secure buildings at start and end of workday, respectively; may turn on and off lights at start and end of day, respectively,
- Constantly keeps the building clean of any scattered paper and other littler that may detract from the appearance and sanitation of building
- Performs other related work as required such as cleaning sidewalks and grounds
- Performs other duties as assigned
MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma/GED preferred
- Some experience in custodial work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
- Excellent communication skills
- Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, leaf blowers, etc
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- General knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in janitorial work
- Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials
- Ability to perform medium physical work
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk and listen. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to fingers, handle, or feel: reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds or more at times. |
